Kenya & Tanzania
Kenya and Tanzania are both often referred to as being best safari destinations in Africa, with the renowned Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater being a big draw for those looking for the ultimate safari experience. These parks are very popular and offer a wide range of ways to see them, from the budget camping options to the quintessential fly-in luxury experience, however if you're looking for something a little more wild then it is getting even easier to combine them with other less-visited parks that offer an authentic and remote safari.
We absolutely love Ruaha and Selous in Tanzania on the Southern Circuit for getting off the beaten track, and Samburu in Kenya for something a little more unique. Of course, we mustn't forget the other big draw - the beaches! After spending a number of days getting dusty on safari and rising early in search of cats on the hunt, both countries have some spectacular beaches to relax on afterwards, with the white sands of Zanzibar and Diani on the Indian Ocean usually just a short flight away.
Best Time to Visit
Kenya and Tanzania have very similar weather patterns that can be carved up as follows
~ Main Dry Season - June to October - highest peak rates during this time ~
~ Short Rains - November to December - great low season rates with short afternoon showers ~
~ Short Dry Season - January to February - great low season rates ~
~ Long Rains - March to May - some lodges and beach hotels close during this time ~
We love the short dry season for the value you get at that time and especially when combining with the calving season in the Southern Serengeti. Of course the main migration in the Western and Northern parts of the park are fabulous during July to September, and the Mara river crossings are not to be missed if you have the budget!
