Uganda & Rwanda
Fondly known as the 'Pearl of Africa', Uganda offers a diversity that rivals many of its larger neighbours. It's the country where jungle meets savannah, framed beautifully by mountains and Africa's largest lake - Lake Victoria. The draw for many visitors is the gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, as well as the chimps in Kibale Forest and Chamburu Gorge, and the spectacular game viewing in the Queen Elizabeth National Park with tree-climbing lions, and water-based activities in Murchison Falls where the Nile cascades through a gap that is just 7m wide.
Rwanda, nicknamed the 'Land of a Thousand Hills' has risen from its turbulent past to become an exceptionally safe, clean and exciting country to visit for those looking for an exceptional gorilla experience, combined with the chance to explore forests, lakes and game parks with canoeing on Lake Kivu, canopy walks in Nyungwe Forest to the typical savannah safari in Akagera National Park.
Rwanda has invested a lot of money in gorilla conservation over the years which is why the permits here are so much more expensive - $1500 versus $700 in Uganda - so this is often a point of consideration when choosing where to see these magnificent creatures.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, and therefore the recommended time to visit is June to August and December to February, and although the rainforests are typically wetter in nature it is much easier to do the gorilla trekking during these months, and more enjoyable!
